THE great weight of support from local dog racing fans and the general clamour in the busy turnstiles for The Stow to remain open must surely be honoured.

The community voice is more important and should hold sway over yet another outbreak of private housing venture capitalism.

Are we are to keep faith with the most attended recreational pastime in Walthamstow and the famous neon light that our residents enjoy most in our beleaguered local night-time economy?

It is clear from the teeming crowds seen rushing into the stadium in recent weeks that many new as well as established racing families are supporting and enjoying their nights out at the dogs.

It must be like high water again when the Stow was first opened in 1933 and crowds were brimming over with this popular dog racing sport, imported from the United States.

I have heard and witnessed the tremendous response to maintain this hallowed racing stadium and the cries of the racing favourites at this much beloved venue.

It has been a second home for so many punters for many years.

If this is what people enjoy then surely the message should be getting through?

Cllr Patrick Smith, Liberal Democrat, Higham Hill
