IN the month that the Olympic baton is officially passed to London, the Shoreditch Festival fuses themes of sport and art with a party atmosphere.

From August 16 to 24, residents, local artists and small businesses that make up the Shoreditch Trust will present a programme of cultural and physical activities in and around Shoreditch Park.

Welcome to the World kicks off festivities from 1pm on the first day of the event with a range of options for all ages, whether you are feeling active or artistic, peckish or parched or just in need of some relaxation.

Throughout the afternoon, The Lift stage - an innovative portable arts venue - will be rocking with world rhythms, including Afro-Brazillian funk Saravah Soul, Cuban salsa of Raices Cubanas featuring violinist Omar Puente and the Congo Faith Healers, beat boxing flute player extraordinaire Nathan ‘Flutebox’ Lee and the legendary blues and soul outfit Little George Sueref and the Blues Stars.

You can exercise more than just your eardrums at the SportInspired Club Showcase and enjoy sports such as tennis, basketball, dance fitness and beach volleyball. You can tease your tastebuds at international catering stalls or relax in an oasis of calm at the Shoreditch Spa.

Dog show, Shoreditch Bark, will also feature prize-winning pups and children will be well entertained with the Pets Corner and the Magical Playground.

Other events in the festival include the first ever mass-participation cycling event Tour de Hackney on Sunday, August 17, slam poetry competition The Lyrical Lift on August 19, the Best of the Leicester Comedy Festival on August 20 and the novel and the endlessly amusing silent disco VIP Club Wireless on August 22 and 23.

Shoreditch Trust chief executive officer Michael Pyner said: “Shoreditch Trust champions the belief that culture is central to the regeneration process.

What better way to welcome the Olympics to Hackney than by showcasing the best we have to offer in terms of the physical and the aesthetic?”
